Flowers Revisited: Budget Reality Check, Please!

I know, I know, it is not the first time that I’ve discussed the topic of flowers.  But as a florist, and former shop owner, I thought I might take a minute to revisit the subject.  So readers, indulge me for a moment!

The reason I wanted to discuss the topic of flowers a little more, is because when it comes down to it, it is the flowers that convey the emotion, style, taste, and tone of the wedding.  When the bride and her party walk down the aisle, the first thing people notice…other than the bride herself, is the flowers that everyone is carrying.  When guests walk into the reception area, it is often the flowers that bring out the ooooh’s and ahhhh’s.  So…if all of that is true, then why oh why are designers often left with the absolute tail end of the deflated budget to work with??? Brides……Please, please, please, rethink your budget strategy!!!

Vow Renewal Couples, Let’s Hear from You!!!

If you’ve been reading my posts, you know that I dedicate most of my blogs to the first time bride. Well today I thought I would write about a wedding topic that doesn’t get as much press…………..the vow renewal!!!

I do not mind sharing the fact that I divorced my first husband after 17 years of a marriage.  While this was a union that probably should have never happened, we did however produce two wonderful children that are now wonderful adults! But alas, this story of a “marriage gone wrong,” does have a happy ending!  Today, I have been married 12.5 years to the most caring, loving, kind, giving, most selfless man on the planet, and in 2014 for our 15th anniversary, we plan to “tie the knot all over again!”

Entourage? Do You Need That Many Opinions?

I cannot help but laugh when I watch the latest and greatest “reality” shows dedicated to everything wedding.  Like all shows claiming to be real life, in real-time, those that broadcast “everything wedding”, are of course edited, scripted, and sometimes….and I’m sorry…dumbed down so the American public will watch.  I mean, who doesn’t enjoy a “bridezilla” having her 15 minutes of tantrum throwing fame?  Do I?  Well not really, but every once in a while these shows do manage to produce a nugget of real wedding planning life!  Think, entourage. And I do not mean the television series!

The Pinterest Phenomenon

If you are a bride that has not discovered Pinterest, you really, really, need to!

Wow who would have thought that what is basically an online scrapbook of ideas, would take off so quickly!  What a fabulous way to share ideas, and to gather inspiration for all sorts of things from home decor, personal fashion, favorite places, and of course wedding designs from the dresses to the flowers!  If you’re looking for it, chances are you are going to find it on Pinterest.

I really never considered blogging about another website.  But when I discovered that Pinterest is now the place that everyone is talking about and visiting, well I figured that I’d pass on the fun!  Now you have to be invited to, or “apply” if you will, to be an active part of Pinterest.  If you are on Facebook, and who isn’t these days, chances are you have many friends that have already discovered this valuable online tool.  If they haven’t invited you…then by all means…ask them to!

This won’t be a long-winded blog….but brides, consider checking out the ideas on Pinterest. Print some of your favorite ideas out before you consult with your florist, shop for a dress, meet with your planner/coordinator…..or guide he or she to the site and point out your favorite ideas.  I think you just might save yourself a lot of legwork looking for design inspiration!

For more information check out www.pinterest.com  Let me know what you think!

What is Your Style?

I talked a bit about wedding style earlier last year, and the relationship between the dresses, and the overall “theme” of the wedding.  I advised bride’s to be careful when choosing the bridesmaids dresses, in that she doesn’t create a Sex and The City meets Gone With the Wind nightmare look!  However, I didn’t really discuss how to create a decor style from the ground up…………………POST dress purchase.  What does that mean exactly?  Ok let’s see if I can explain it.

The Wedding Cake……..When to Cut and Serve?

When do we cut the cake?  Oddly enough I get asked this question time and time again.  Actually even as a full-time florist, I would get asked about the timing of that very traditional act.  Cutting a cake…sounds simple enough…….but alas it appears not to be so!

Time honored tradition dictates that the wedding “cake cutting ceremony” is to commence immediately following the meal.  I would assume………but I’m not positive so don’t hold me to it……….that this tradition was practiced due to the fact that in the past, the food served at a reception was on the very light side.  If you investigate weddings of the past, you will find that the reception often consisted of light hors dourves, or a very light meal, that was capped off with a piece of wedding cake.  Back then, the act of cutting the cake also signified that the event was wrapping up, and guests could choose to leave at that point.

Ceremony Decor……….How Much do You Really Need?

I chat often about where I believe brides should concentrate the larger part of their budgets.  After the dress/dresses and tux’s are chosen,  the venue is rented, the food and drink decided upon, the music selected, there is sometimes not a lot leftover for the florist and/or designer to work with!  The problem is, the bride often has her heart set on the “look” she found in a bridal publication waaaaaaay before the reality of divvying the budget really began.  So now what?  You’ve found your dream wedding in a magazine, only to find out that reality can really………..well for a lack of a better term…………….SUCK!  Ok, don’t panic………..let’s talk about the ceremony location vs the reception area and see what we can do……..

Time to Plan Your Fall Wedding

If you live in California like I do, you’re thinking to yourself…fall?  We haven’t even had winter yet!  In reality we are just 8 months from the beginning of the Fall season, and in the world of wedding planning….that’s pretty much tomorrow!  As a coordinator and designer, I’m looking to purchase some decor items I can use in my Fall weddings while they are on sale.  And brides…………….now is a great time to start looking for those fabulous accessories to adorn your Fall or Winter wedding for 2012 before the prices go up at the end of Spring!

This is not the first time I’ve written about Fall weddings.  I think I come back to it, because it holds fond memories of my own Fall wedding in October of 1999.  Years ago when I owned my floral shop, Fall was just starting to become a very desired time of the year to hold weddings.  Traditionally summer still reigns supreme, at least in our region, because of the comfortable evenings and mostly dry weather!  If you plan to get married in the foothills or the Sierra’s of Ca., in the summer, you can pretty much count on the rain not spoiling your day!  However as the seasons have shifted a bit, Fall has proven to provide even better weather….and long into the year too!

So what should you be looking for?  Well if you are a DIY bride, I suggest if you plan on going with a traditional Fall color and feel to your wedding, that you look to the internet to find companies with leftover Fall and Halloween decor.  Winter brides for 2012….start scanning the Christmas closeout sales for lights, greenery, and accessories to add to your decor!  Don’t forget that items that are considered “holiday” are often fabulous pieces that you can use in your wedding!  Pumpkins, fall leaves, garlands, orange lights, cornucopia, gourds, etc, are absolutely a welcomed part of designing a Fall themed wedding. Bringing in Mother Nature is always a theme of mine, and Fall is the perfect time to bring in the textures and colors of what she has to offer.  Don’t forget to bring in some different mosses that come in an array of different shapes, colors and textures.  Moss covered oak branches that I am so lucky to have access too, really add a pop of color and drama to any look!

And girls………the best part?  You’ll save big $$$$ by bringing in naturals and items on sale in every area that  needs dressing up!!!  As an experienced florist, I can honestly say that a large part of the budget…especially the reception, will go toward your decor……i.e. flowers. But you can still have a beautiful, stunning, fabulous wedding by incorporating other materials into your arrangements that only serve to enhance any flower choice!!!  And don’t you want your guests to go home talking about how they loved the fact that you took the time to “think outside the box” when it came to your wedding?  Don’t be afraid to take tradition into a whole new area!!!!!!!!  Most of all HAVE FUN!!!!!  Oh and don’t forget to bring in some fun and exciting fabrics and linens to add another element of WOW!!!

Happy Shopping!
